Commemorating VCU’s History: Challenges and Opportunities

Share

Dear VCU and VCU Health communities:

As we celebrate our 50 years together under the VCU name in 2018, it is fitting that we reflect on the history and legacy of our institution. We do this within a broader national conversation and alongside many of our peers in higher education who are examining their pasts and the ways in which histories—both inspiring and tragic—have been commemorated and memorialized.

This fall, we will host a series of events to reflect on VCU across the past 50 years. These events will seek to engage broad members of our community, including students and alumni, faculty and emeriti faculty, staff, administrators, visitors, and our neighbors in Central Virginia.

Specifically, members of the VCU community are invited to present their research, scholarship, creative products, or pedagogy relevant to VCU and its history at a daylong symposium and conference scheduled for Nov. 30. VCU faculty, staff, and students will present papers or as part of panels in 60-minute breakout sessions to be scheduled on both campuses. Students are also encouraged to present research posters, creative products, or performances related to VCU and its history.

Presentation and poster topics may include, but are not limited to:

Perspectives on VCU’s 50-year relationship with the Richmond community
Current and historical perspectives on art and design at VCU
Learning from and with the community
Diversity, voice, inclusion, and exclusion at VCU
Student, faculty, staff, and alumni perspectives on VCU
Pedagogy and institutional history
Faculty, student, staff and alumni contributions to higher education and our community
Accomplishments, breakthroughs and discoveries
Change, struggle and emergence of institutional identity
Learning from the past to imagine VCU’s future

We owe much to the generations of Rams who have built VCU into a distinguished, distinctive, and nationally premier research university and academic health center. I look forward to listening, learning, and celebrating our 50 years together.

Sincerely,

Michael Rao
